Advances have significantly reduced its carbon intensity
A new milestone in the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) was achieved by state-run oil giant Petrobras’ Duque de Caxias Refinery (Reduc) in the first half of October. With the product’s international recertification, the company made strides that significantly reduced the carbon intensity of SAF, reinforcing the highest global standards for sustainability, traceability, and governance.
An international aviation audit confirmed significant progress in the fuel’s environmental performance. It recognized improvements implemented in the management of hydrogen sources used in SAF production, bringing the refinery’s operations even more in line with international certification methodology.
As a result, the carbon intensity of the hydrogen used in production was reduced by 29 percent. This improvement, achieved using corn oil – which reduced the SAF’s carbon intensity by 23.8 percent – had a direct impact on environmental performance.
This makes the SAF produced by Reduc one of the sustainable aviation fuels with the lowest carbon intensity available on the market.
“Reduc’s achievement demonstrates that reducing emissions associated with SAF depends not only on the use of certified raw materials but also on the continuous search for process solutions capable of lowering the carbon footprint of the inputs used in production,” William França, Petrobras’s director of industrial processes and products, stated.
Petrobras, he went on to say, is making progress in developing alternatives to meet future regulatory requirements and expand its share of the renewable and low-carbon fuel markets “by improving its processes and strengthening its sustainability governance.”
